Homework plays an important role in reinforcing the concepts taught in class. I ask my students to take this seriously and devote a strong effort and regular practice.
A student in my classroom can expect the following assignments as apart of their nightly homework.
Math:
Homework Sheet ( Ex. h.w. 1.6 (Module 1 Lesson 6)
Regular practice of math facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; look for monster wheels - MW)
Language Arts:
Spelling Practice - The spelling lists are based on the Fountas and Pinnell Word Study program. The students take a series of high frequency spelling tests to determine their foundation. Based on the words that they spell incorrectly, the students then use those words as their personal spelling lists. Each week between 5-10 words from their high frequency list are used as their personal spelling list. In addition to this list, the student will also have 5 words from our phonics focus of the week. Words are usually assigned on Monday and the test is given on Friday, unless otherwise stated.
Wordly Wise (vocabulary work): Each unit takes approximately two weeks to complete. Flashcards are started in class and then completed at home. Once the cards are completed, nightly practice is expected. Depending on the amount of work that is completed in class, vocabulary exercises may be assigned for homework. A Wordly Wise unit test, consisting of multiple choice questions and fill in the blank statements, is given at the end of the two week period - usually on the Thursday of the second week.
Reading:
Everyone is expected to read 20 minutes each night. The amount of time spent reading will increase as the year progresses. When a book report has been assigned, the student may use the 20 minutes of independent reading to work on and complete their book report. Please look for the project description for specific details and expectations.
Science / Social Studies:
Assignments are not frequent, but will occasionally be assigned depending on how much is completed in class.
